New Year’s resolutions: from being more selfish to solving Rubik’s cubes

Designers tell us their goals and aspirations for 2016.

“I’ve got three resolutions, all along a similarly selfish line:

  • Be better at saying no, and free up time that can be devoted to doing less things better.
  • Devote at least one day a week to Cog projects, rather than our clients’ projects.
  • Celebrate Cog’s 25th anniversary with the enthusiasm that such an occasion deserves.”

“After visiting the Syrian refugee camp in Bekaa Valley Lebanon before Christmas, and also making two trips to Calais over Christmas with emergency supplies, I’ve decided to use my skills and resources to help raise awareness around the complexity of the refugee crisis. I want to look further and see if I can find solutions that work for them and us – so I’m putting together an in-depth photographic art project of the suffering I saw, which will be exhibited in Easter 2016.”

Joe Macleod 2016
Joe Macleod, founder, Include Design

“For me, this year is going to be more the sum of parts rather than one resolution. So this year’s aims will be building upon what has been achieved over the last 12 months.

Firstly, closure experiences – I want to continue raising this as an issue. Last year went well, I even got an interview on the BBC. So, I’m going to continue conferences, articles, interviews, etc. this year.

Secondly, writing the book around the same theme. This was tough last year, but I’ve improved on writing and picking achievable themes. So this year’s aim is to get chapters nailed, and hopefully the whole book out.

Thirdly, continue teaching and preaching – this includes digital, coding and product development. It’s been enormous fun this last year working with kids, adults and companies to help them build confidence with technology and enable them to design and build the products they want.”

“In 2016, I want TEMPLO to:

  • change opinions
  • be daring
  • incite debate
  • blur the lines

I’ll do this every day except Thursdays, which I’m spending with my baby daughter. (Oh, and I want to solve a Rubik’s cube in under a minute…)”
