Microsoft Edge has a new logo

Microsoft has unveiled the latest logo design for its internet browser platform, which is still in beta mode.

Microsoft has revealed the updated logo for its internet browser, Microsoft Edge. The new logo coincides with the browser’s shift from running on in-house engines to using Google’s open-source Chromium project.

The software company’s previous browser platform, Internet Explorer, launched in 1995 but was recently discontinued. Edge — announced in 2015 — is Microsoft’s attempt to re-enter the market, now dominated by Google Chrome.

By changing to Chromium-based technology, the browser will be able to make full use of extensions available on Google’s Chrome Web Store.

Evolving logo design

Edge’s first logo was much more similar to Internet Explorer’s, featuring a linear re-drawing of the well-known blue ‘e’.

The new branding plays on familiarity with Internet Explorer but has a more streamlined design, closer to contemporary rivals.

Riffing on Internet Explorer’s ‘e’, the updated logo forms a more abstract wave-like structure featuring the familiar blue but also a new shade of green.

At the time of publishing, Microsoft was not able to confirm who has designed the new logo.

It was not a straightforward unveiling; users found the logo through a series of clues and puzzles created by Microsoft employees on Reddit. Eventually these led to a surfing game which, once completed, revealed the logo.

The Chromium-based version of Edge was launched in beta mode earlier this year, and is expected to be released on general release 15 January 2020.

If you look at the naff NASA logo and this Microsoft thing. There is a similarity – a lack of originality and poverty of creative thought.
