THS’ plans for temple in Japan

Thomas Heatherwick studio should this week get approval for a project to design a temple in Kagoshima, southern Japan, for the Buddhist Shingon-Shu sect.

Detailed discussions are underway with city authorities regarding the temple, which will be sited with views over Kagoshima and across the sea to the active Sakurajima volcano in the east.

The temple is to be constructed with a steel frame designed to withstand seismic and typhoon conditions, supporting a timber envelope with a ceramic external finish. The form of the building is inspired by folds of a fabric and is due to be completed in 2005.
