New title for The London Institute

The London Institute, the federation of five leading design colleges, has applied to become the ‘University of the Arts, London’, Design Week has learned.

The institute submitted the name to the Privy Council in November and hopes to receive approval ‘within weeks’, says an institute spokeswoman.

News of the institute’s name change follows its announcement last week that the London College of Printing will be known from January as the London College of Communication (DW 27 November).

Its four other colleges – Central St Martins College of Art and Design, Camberwell College of Arts, Chelsea College of Art and Design and London College of Fashion – are expected to retain their individual names.
