Why didn’t we know about ecu competition?

For those who missed The European’s article (14 June) it seems the ecu, or euro as it should be known, will “reach a key stage next month with an awards ceremony for the winning designs”.

Congratulations to Sylvia Bourdon (the campaign’s champion, it would seem), who appears to have negotiated this immensely important task away from the Central European Bank’s bureaucracy – and rightly so.

But when was this competition organised and did the British design community know it was ever happening? As Sylvia Bourdon herself states, the single currency is probably the most important issue facing Europe today. Is it too late for us to have a say now, rather than carp on about the results when we all have to use them?
