Nigel Coates takes new RCA role

Architect Nigel Coates is to join the Royal College of Art in the newly created post of professor of architectural design, and plans “a vigorous redefining of the discipline”. Coates is senior partner at practice Branson Coates.

The RCA’s professor of architecture position was abolished in 1993. The new title includes the word “design” because the college aims to “open the course up for more collaborations with furniture and interior designers”, says Professor Floris van den Broecke, head of the school of architecture, interior design and furniture.

“We need a figurehead, a leader, an inspirational person to lead architecture into the spectrum of design activities, so it isn’t a discipline on its own,” he adds.

mThe Architectural Association’s school of architecture is poised to appoint a new head. A meeting this week confirmed that Mohsen Mostafavi, professor at the Harvard Graduate School, will be put forward for a ballot in the next two weeks. He will be elected if he wins more than 50 per cent of votes from staff and students at the London school.
