Design Council is totally committed to sustainability

How curious to imply in your Leader that sustainability might have ‘run its course at the Design Council’ and headline a news item ‘Design Council cuts sustainability’ (DW 4 October); neither could be further from the truth.

Over the past three years the Design Council has ramped up its focus and investment around sustainable design so that it is now central to all our work. We have a financial commitment to increase this activity every year.

Sustainability is embedded in almost everything we do, from our skills initiatives to our business support programmes. We are proud that our work on domestic energy consumption has informed the Mayor’s Climate Change Strategy for London, that a pilot originated by our team is being rolled out to 7500 homes, and that through Dott 07, thousands of citizens in the North East have taken part in design-led sustainability activities.

Design Council cuts sustainability? Hardly. We urge everyone to come to the Dott 07 Festival in Newcastle Gateshead from 16-28 October to see for themselves.

David Kester, Chief executive, Design Council, London WC2

How curious that you should be curious that people are curious as to why the DC so ‘committed’ to sustainability should make redundant its Head of Sustainability. We’ll be sure to increase our carbon footprint travelling to the North East to view the Dott 07 teams efforts to show case sustainability and satisfy our curiosity.
