Industrial design needs a strong manufacturing base

I am interested in the debate in Design Week about what is wrong with UK design.

As a graduate industrial designer of three years, I have had a hell of a time trying to manoeuvre myself into a position of creative input with a design group. While trying to understand the distrust much of the British manufacturing industry holds towards these consultancies, I have taken it upon myself to break into this world of manufacturing and find out what makes it tick.

What I find is a manufacturing base disappearing as fast as the old school engineers are retiring.

British capital generating industries need to get involved with young designers. Otherwise, Britain is in danger of imploding from the weight of service industries without currency coming into the country.
