Samsung set to expand roster

Korean electronics group Samsung is looking to broaden its “core” of European product design consultancies with a new appointment expected next year.

Samsung European design manager Clive Grinyer reveals in our product design survey that he is keen to update the team of regular consultancies to “broaden the vision and bring in new names”.

He adds that the trawl will be Europe-wide rather than UK- based. “Very possibly we’ll work with another consultancy in addition to our existing ones within the next year,” he says. IDEO and Pentagram are among the team of design groups already used.

Findings from the DW survey show product designers are undervalued and undersold in the UK. Richard Watson of client advisory agency EDR says they tend to be “commercially unsophisticated” and most clients agree they are not as skilled at marketing themselves as other design disciplines.
