As a professional service we charge by the hour

How long is a piece of string?

Jeremy Haines makes some good points about free-pitching and the bigger issue of falling margins in the design industry (Design Business, DW 21 November). This begs the old question of the way in which we charge for creative work and ideas.

We’re all conscious that in our industry we work the law of averages when it comes to time and therefore profitability. How long does it take to come up with a great idea?

Should we be joining the ranks of professional services and management consultancies in charging by the hour and tackle the underlying issue of falling margins?
