The Plant designs interactive video wall for the National Maritime Museum

The Plant is creating an interactive video wall for the National Maritime Museum’s new Sammy Ofer wing.

The consultancy was appointed following a five-way creative pitch in December 2010.

Five screens will be displayed in the reception, with an additional screen in the café.

They will display visitor information and animations that vary according to climate conditions, using Met Office data. Visitors can interact with the wall using the Foursquare mobile phone app.

Matt Utber, founder of The Plant, says, ’We’ve taken the signage system in a much more creative direction. Our pitch was about using the language of television and the language of sailing, shipping and the poetry of the sea so that it was more engaging for people.’

The video wall will incorporate the brand guidelines created by Someone (DW 25 May 2010), and uses bespoke software created by German company Stinova.
Utber says, ’The biggest issue is technology. It’s never been done before the animation has been created in Flash and Stinova is rewriting the software for us.’

Fiona Romeo, head of digital media at the National Maritime Museum, says, ’With the expanded offer at the museum there’s a lot more happening and we needed a way to quickly and clearly communicate that.’

The Sammy Ofer wing opens on 14 July.
