Painful thinking, but it won’t put potential clients off

Graphic designers – ever wondered what those Latin words used in mock-ups actually mean?

Well, wonder no more, because font anorak and Virginia publication director Richard McClintock has translated Lorem ipsum dolor.

The phrase actually stems from a passage by Cicero that begins: ‘There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain’.

A bit depressing, we know, but it’s better than using English words because, as McClintock says, if you do, your client will spend more time reading the copy than looking at your great design work. Hmm, not a bad idea, though
