New Year Honours for creatives

A number of creatives have been recognised in the New Year Honours list, in what could be seen as evidence of the Government’s public commitment to the UK’s creative industries.

WPP Group chief executive Martin Sorrell has been knighted in the New Year Honours list, for services to the communications industry. WPP is the parent company of design groups including Enterprise IG, BDG McColl, Coley Porter Bell and The Brand Union.

A number of architects are honoured in the list, in what could be seen as evidence of the Government’s public commitment to the UK’s creative industries.

People responsible for a number of Millennium Products have been honoured with OBEs, as has Ofsted adviser for design and technology Michael Ive.

Involvement in Millennium projects, in particular the Millennium Dome and the London Eye, has elevated a number of consultants to the list.

Architect Mike Davies of Richard Rogers Partnership has been awarded a CBE for services to the Dome, as has chief design engineer Ian Liddell of Buro Happold. David Marks and Julia Barfield have been given MBEs for services to the London Eye.

Jubilee Line head of architecture Romano Paoletti also receives a CBE, as does architect Ian Ritchie.

Former Glasgow School of Art director Professor Dugald Cameron has been awarded an OBE for services to art and design.
