Pentagram’s John McConnell is in a paid creative pitch to design signage for Expo ’98 in Lisbon.

He faces Italy’s Italo Lupi, Japan’s Shigeo Fukud, Michael Bierut in the US, Spain’s Peret and Portugal’s Carlos Rocha, João Machado, Luis Carrôlo, João Nunes and José Brandão.

The winner will receive nearly 43 000 while losing designers will get about 20 000 each. A decision is expected this week.
