Government drives research

THE Government is backing a 25m research programme, aiming to secure the UK’s position as a globally competitive centre for the vehicle industry in the 21st century.

Under the Foresight Vehicle programme, the Government hopes to develop technology which will be ready for manufacture and delivery in 2020. Over 350 organisations are involved in the project, from design companies to vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, plus universities, research and trade associations.

The programme aims to develop environmentally-friendly propulsion systems, leading to reduced emissions and light-weight materials that will yield a six per cent fuel saving.

Advanced electronic systems are also being developed to make driving easier for elderly drivers, as well as telematic systems that give drivers information and reduce accidents and congestion.
