Gateshead Millennium Bridge opens

Lighting specialist Jonathan Spiers and Associates will see four years’ work on the Gateshead Millennium Bridge come to fruition when the landmark development opens on Friday 14 September.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is the world’s first pivoting, rotating bridge. The 850-ton steel structure lifts to allow boats to pass underneath. Working with structural engineer and architect Gifford and Partners and Wilkinson Eyre respectively, Spiers has created an energy-efficient lighting system that reinforces the form of the structure, says founder Jonathan Spiers.
