Jawbone has overhauled its fitness tracker portfolio, expanded its range and radically changed the look of its UP product to make it more “fashion-focused”.

The UP range offers a variety of biometric, sensorial and tracking features such as a pedometer and the ability to measure heart rate and sleep quality to help give users insights into personal health.

A new strap design has been added to Jawbone’s UP2 product and ten new colours have been introduced.

“versatile and jewellery-like”

The new strap offers a lighter more minimal design with cutaway sections and new textured surfaces.

There are improved features on the UP2, UP3 and UP4 and Jawbone says the new generation of products will be more reliable owing to free “over the air” updates.

Jawbone’s vice president of product management and strategy Travis Bogard says that the “versatile and jewellery-like” UP2, which is combined with an app, offers “beautiful design and premium materials to create the ultimate fashion accessory for those who want to live better in style.”

Yves Behar, who is chief creative officer at Jawbone, has worked on the “slim and stylish” industrial design of the new products, which aim to be designs that can be worn around the clock.

Automatic Sleep Detection

The new-look strap comes in new colours Turquoise Circle, Oat Spectrum, Gunmetal Hex, Orchid Circle and Black Diamond.

New features for the UP2, UP3 and UP4 products include Automatic Sleep Detection and Passive Heart Rate Monitoring.

Automatic Sleep Detection means users no longer need to tap the device to enter and exit sleep mode and the band can automatically detect when the user has fallen asleep at night and when they wake up in the morning.

The UP3 and UP4 products capture REM, light and deep sleep information – as they did before the updates.

Passive Heart Rate

Passive Heart Rate readings are taken periodically throughout the day while the user is still and it is available on the UP3 and UP4 devices which previously only offered Resting Heart Rate and nighttime heart rate.

According to Jawbone, while Resting Heart Rate gives the best indication of overall heart health Passive Health Rate gives a broader picture and will give the user an insight into the effects of variables such as diet, caffeine, stressful meetings and other stimuli on their health.
