Some designers just aren’t worth the price

I would like to correct a misquotation which was credited to me in the article on fees (DW 1 August). – I was quoted as saying: “There’s an awful myth that everybody is wonderful, and that’s rubbish.

I would like to correct a misquotation which was credited to me in the article on fees (DW 1 August).

I was quoted as saying: “There’s an awful myth that everybody is wonderful, and that’s rubbish. The ones that don’t make much money don’t because their work is not worth much.”

What I actually said was that there is a convention within the design sector that all design consultancies’ work is wonderful, and that this is nonsense. As with all other fields of human endeavour the quality of work produced by design consultancies ranges from the superb to the inferior. Some companies who have difficulty in earning the fee-levels they set for themselves have this difficulty because the quality of their work is not worthy of the price they are trying to charge for it.
