Shopping reaches new plains

Ethical shoppers are being given a conscientious way to buy with the launch of the first two of a planned chain of Out of this World stores.

Monday sees the opening of the Newcastle store, three weeks after the first started trading in Bristol. Interior design is by Fern Green Partnership. Graphics are by sole practitioner Robina Newman.

Key aspirations of Out of this World include local community involvement, environmental sustainability, fair trade and animal welfare. Fern Green’s designs will evolve with each shop, influenced by location.

The designs seek to offer an alternative to the dull health food shop style of the past. Central to the design is a curved deli counter. Materials and lighting have been sourced to be as environmentally friendly as possible, for example, interior signage is made from recycled card suspended with natural twine.

Out of this World aims to open two more stores early in 1996. In October a similar chain, supermarket-style Planet Organic, launched its first store with design by Coley Porter Bell (DW 27 October).
