One Foot Taller

Perhaps the most successful Glasgow-based design group, One Foot Taller was founded by Catti Barac and Will White. They met at Glasgow School of Art where they both studied product design. Their rotationally moulded plastic chair Chasm, won Best of Show at 100% Design in 1998 and the furniture award at the Peugeot Design Awards in 1999, where the group also collected the overall prize.

The Chasm chair, commissioned by Andy Harrold of Nicehouse, has also just been given Millennium Product status. Past work includes a range of household items made from recycled parts of washing machines and the successful One, a tiny aluminium ashtray created for the single smoker.

At the Glasgow collection the group will exhibit three versions of the Chasm chair: Chasm #1, Chasm #2, an armchair, and Chasm #3, a dining room chair. The consultancy is now also turning to interiors and collaborating with Timorous Beasties for the interiors of Glasgow café Strata and The Arches, a club/bar/performance area underneath Glasgow station which is soon to be renovated.
