Thorn EMI’s annual report is now available on the Internet, with design work by Tor Pettersen & Partners and Asset Graphics.

The music and rental company’s report is believed to be the second annual report on the Internet. Retail chain Tesco has its report on the Web, which was also designed by Tor Pettersen.

“It’s hard to know what’s on the Net, but we checked the names of the FTSE 1000 companies and Thorn EMI and Tesco were the only companies with reports on their sites,” says Tor Pettersen managing director Nancy Burton.

Burton adds: “Designing for the Web brings an interesting challenge because there is a need for immediacy. Downloading graphics is still extremely slow on the Net so you have to balance the need for speed with the effectiveness of the graphics you use.”

The group incorporated the same graphics used in the printed annual report, which it also designed, but used them “in different ways so that the immediacy was retained”, says Burton.
