TURBO TABLE IRONING BOARD

If you’re keen to reduce your ironing time by 20 per cent and guarantee that perfect crease down the trouser leg the Turbo Table could be for you. Combining ‘professional’ pressing capabilities with conventional steam ironing, the lightweight board goes on sale next month.

Product innovation apart, what makes the board particularly interesting to us is that it has been designed and developed by design group BIB, which has also overseen its manufacture and marketing.

Having spotted a new-product opportunity some 18 months ago, BIB set about designing the board. And following an international trawl of manufacturers, a UK firm – Polypipe of Doncaster – was finally chosen as ‘the most cost-effective in terms of quality’, says BIB founder Nick Butler.

According to Butler, the key to the design is the integration into the board of the type of fan used in computers. This creates a low vacuum which sucks steam from the iron through the item being ironed into the board and out through the end. The fan is driven by a 12-volt transformer, which means the board needs no connection to mains electricity.

Another feature is the board’s light weight – ‘just under 6kg’ says Butler. This is down to the extensive use of polypropylene, 30 per cent talc-filled for heat resistance. The ironing surface has a cotton cover, fitted over a layer of cellular foam held into place by a steel mesh.

But don’t be fooled by all this lightness. This board is tough. ‘We had to design it so you can stand on it,’ says Butler.
