Ferb Greeb future for the earth

FERN GREEN PARTNERSHIP has created retail interiors for a Millennium project devoted to exploring the possibilities of a green and sustainable future. The Earth Centre, which opened last week, will attract tourists through a range of activities promoting environmentally friendly policies.

Designed by architect Feilden Clegg, the Earth Centre is built on two disused South Yorkshire collieries. It integrates modern technology with environmental concerns.

The design includes a building submerged under soil and grass. Inside is the action centre, which provides information about the centre and access to computers and the Internet. This is surrounded by areas devoted to “green” retailers such as Oxfam and the Body Shop.

Nigel Green, partner at Fern Green says, “The design is driven by a response to the centre’s objectives and provides an interesting combination of retail outlet and information.”
