Architects pitch for Stansted job

Airport operator BAA is in the midst of a pitch to appoint architects to spearhead the expansion of Stansted airport, a BAA spokesman confirms this week. The initiative paves the way for the involvement of interior design consultants at the airport.

‘We’re looking to appoint [lead] architects, in the plural, to play a key role,’ he says, adding that the organisation is also considering surface access and environmental consultants. Pitches took place last week, with appointments expected to be finalised by the end of April.

BAA will submit its planning application for a second runway, adjoining terminal building and ‘supporting infrastructure’, including roads and railways, to Stansted’s local planning authority at the ‘tail end’ of 2005, according to the spokesman.

The airport extension is expected to be fully operational by 2012.
