M&S stops design director search

Both Enterprise IG executive creative director Jon Turner and freelance designer and former Dorling Kindersley creative director Judi Green have been in discussions with M&S for the role of head of creative design.

The recruitment U-turn follows the appointment two weeks ago of Yasmin Yusuf as creative director of clothing and last week’s deal with George Davies to produce its womenswear range.

Yusuf will oversee all clothing but not the homeware or food divisions, nor corporate branding.

According to Green, the brief she received was to oversee the retailer’s entire identity, including in-store design, to ensure consistency. She says it would have been “like the glue” holding all design aspects together. Turner confirms he was in discussions with M&S about the role of head of creative design, looking at all aspects of the company’s design.

According to Green, senior design industry figures may have been put off the role of overall head of design because of confusion at M&S over what the job should involve.
