Graphic and digital design are different disciplines

While totally agreeing with Alistair Williamson’s comments (DW 27 November 2003), it is little wonder that job opportunities for graphic design graduates are so few. My visits to three degree shows suggest that students are too pre-occupied with digital media software, resulting in ‘novel effect’ concepts.

The inability of graduates to demonstrate their ability to handle form type and colour allied to ‘Mac’ competence simply produces more applicants for McDonald’s.

Colleges should address the deficiency.
