Edinburgh consultancy Skakel & Skakel has developed the retail outlet for the UK’s first millennium museum, which was opened in the Scottish capital by the Queen last week.
The £34m Dynamic Earth project consists of a huge audiovisual exhibition covering the history of the planet. The project aims to attract 430 000 visitors in its first year and includes a 90-minute tour, ending with a display of natural phenomena such as earthquakes and tidal waves.
Skakel & Skakel director Bob Thwaites says the brief for the 186sqm shop was “to provide a themed environment, selling a select range of quality and branded merchandise”.
Five large ceiling rafts have also been implemented to represent the world’s continents.
“They provide an innovative dramatic backdrop to the lighting scheme. Bold colour has been used to create feature merchandising areas …[These] serve to articulate the environment and differentiate product zones,” explains Thwaites.
