Labour’s commitment to design as a creative industry and as a predominantly small business has been spelt out in a number of manifestos, particularly in its Create the Future document, quoted here:
The huge importance and value of British architecture and design will be a fundamental consideration in all Government policy.
Labour will work to increase awareness of the need for more investment in design and development of products. We will encourage the work of the Design Council in promoting the dissemination of best practice.
We will encourage and enable creative talent through the New Millennium Commission and… a National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA).
We will discuss with the design industry the possibility of setting up a design advisory panel to advise on design application and quality.
In light of the Dearing Committee report on Higher Education and Funding… we will review the scale and the quality of all courses which serve our cultural industries and identify ways in which existing budgets can be spent more effectively to achieve higher quality, better targeted training.
