Titles like Monocle are still pushing at the boundaries

From Alexey Brodovitch’s Harper’s Bazaar through to Willy Fleckhaus’s Twen to Fabien Baron’s Italian Vogue to Fernando Gutiérrez’s beautiful work with Matador and Beyond, there are too many radical graphic design titles to mention (Voxpop, DW 24 April).

However, today very few shine out through the deluge of titles with their the screaming straplines. Many start out well, but fall into an inevitable chase for mass-market appeal and all-important revenue. Let’s hope that current innovators such as Pop, Wallpaper, Monocle and Wonderland continue to push the boundaries of design against the tide of this editorial blandness.
