Sorrell to sit as chair of Cabe

Former Design Council chairman and Newell and Sorrell founder John Sorrell has been selected as the next chairman of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, as predicted by Design Week last month (DW 11 November).

Sorrell was chosen by Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell for his ‘great expertise in the field of design, together with his wide experience of public life’. He will take up the post on 14 December for a period of four years and a salary of £42 000.

Sorrell will oversee Cabe’s remit to campaign for better design in public buildings and spaces.

The public body has spent four months without a chairman after Stuart Lipton stepped down.
