David Shrigley is the favourite to win the prize.

He has already achieved a measure of fame for his cartoon-like drawings, which are accessible enough to have been serialised in the national press.

His amateurish conflation of printed letters and doodle-like drawings could certainly work at the offbeat end of cartoon culture.

But their weird mystique, combined with Shrigley’s art school background, have rooted them in the art domain.
