RDD unveils London hotel spa

RDD has created interiors for a new hotel spa in London, which opens at the Intercontinental Park Lane in late May.

The Urban Spa is part of a broader £76m refurbishment of the London hotel, and the consultancy was briefed to create a ‘contemporary, comfortable and atmospheric’ space, says RDD director Allan Fraser.

Interiors feature a dark palette with materials including polished black Quartza stone floors, black glass and Wenge timber wallpanels and black Bisazza mosaic tiles. Lighting also plays an important role, with LED strip lighting acting as a ‘path of light’, says Fraser.

‘It was essential to get the illumination right to complement the dark colours and maximise the atmosphere. Lighting is generally very low with feature lighting to display products and artwork,’ he says.

Corridors are illuminated by colour-changing glazed walls that lead to individual treatment rooms. Colour-changing light is also used in the treatment rooms themselves, which are equipped with showers, changing areas, leather seating and individual sculptural displays. Signs, also designed by RDD, are in illuminated red perspex.

RDD was appointed to the project in 2004, without a pitch.
