Uniform project for Liverpool theatres

Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse theatres are revamping their seasonal brochures, starting with the Spring/Summer programme designed by Liverpool consultancy Uniform.

The brochures are the start of a larger redevelopment process, which will include a refurbishment of both theatres by architect Haworth Tompkins and a new website, www.everymanplayhouse.com. However, a spokeswoman for the organisation claims that the visual identity will not be changed.

Uniform was appointed to the work following a credentials pitch against five undisclosed consultancies in December. It is working with the theatres to produce all seasonal programmes and other promotional material, although it is understood the brief may be widened to include brand development.

The group was initially briefed to create a suite of brochures that brings together the different venues. Each Spring/Summer brochure is produced in A5 size in an attempt to aid navigation, and uses a reversible viewing method to distinguish content for the theatres.

‘The brief was quite restrictive because they wanted to get across to a newer, younger audience, but the Everyman is young and cutting edge, while the Playhouse is more thought-provoking, for a slightly older audience,’ says Benji Holroyd, senior designer at Uniform. ‘We had to try to bring the two together and achieved this by selecting a simple colour palette to define the theatres and create a joint season diary in the centre of the programme.’
