Bristol groups take on London market

Bristol design consultancies are joining forces to launch a directory of local design, animation and marketing groups, in an effort to take on the London design market.

The publication, titled 0117: Made in Bristol, is being designed and produced by local publisher Wildfire at a cost of £160 000 to Bristol City Council, the South West Regional Development Agency and private business.

The regional creative network Bristol Media is planning what it describes as a ‘guerrilla marketing campaign’ for the book, which launches in September.

‘We are going to take vans full of Bristol’s creative company managing directors to London, where they will be distributing the directories for free to creatives as they come out of their offices in Shoreditch and Soho,’ says Mike Bennett, chairman of Bristol Media.

Local design groups claim that the city needs to promote itself to attract more senior creative staff.

Bennett says ‘Part of our aim at Bristol Media is to promote the city as an attractive place for creatives to live and work in, and as such we are viewing 0117 as the first part of our new Made in Bristol campaign,’

The directory will list more than 300 design, digital, animation and marketing companies and contain features on local creative entrepreneurs.

Bristol Media has only secured funding for the first directory, though it hopes to publish 0117 annually.

The network is planning a website to accompany the launch of the directory, and is looking to appoint a design consultancy over the coming months.
