Design-led refresh for FT Weekend

The Financial Times launches its new-look FT Weekend edition tomorrow, with a redesign led by FT Weekend editor Andy Davis.

A revamped weekend format will ditch the twin-section news layout currently employed, to combine the paper’s news into a single 26-page section including the analysis page and obituary column. The news section redesign has been handled by Shakeup Media.

The FT Weekend Magazine has been beefed up with a larger template, larger images and new content.  A Pursuits section for outdoor enthusiasts and healthy living will makes its first appearance in the morning. Ceative work on the magazine has been led by FT Weekend art director Alex Breuer.

Back inside the main paper, the Life and Arts section is being expanded to include the books section, the ‘Lunch with the FT column’ and the TV listings, which currently sit inside the FT magazine.

‘We’re calling it “a refresh” and it is certainly design-led,’ says Davis. ‘We want to give better display to our journalism.’

‘There are also a lot of fine documentary photographers out there who have begun to find that as newspaper formats shrink, so does the market  for their work. We want to give it the exposure it deserves,’ he adds.

The FT Weekend redesign follows the refresh of the daily edition by Davis and Shakeup last year.
