Four British photographers have made it on to the shortlist for the inaugural Sony World Photography Awards.

A total of 33 international professional photographers are vying to win the title of photographer of the year, £13 000 prize money and the award of the L’iris d’Or.

Three professional photographers were shortlisted in each of the 11 categories: architectural, advertising, fashion, photojournalism/documentary, music/performance, sport, nature, science, nude, abstract and portraiture.

The British artists shortlisted are advertising photographer Tim Macpherson (whose Pregnant Boy on a Skateboard is pictured), portrait photographer Vanessa Winship, nature photographer Anup Shah and nude photographer Anthony Marsland.

The board will now begin selecting the category winners, with the ultimate winner announced at an awards ceremony at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes on 24 April.

An exhibition of work by the finalists and other photographers will run from 21-25 April, also at the Palais des Festivals. The exhibition is being designed by Standard 8.

See Design Week magazine on Wednesday 16 April for an in-depth look at the entries.
