Textiles and materials inspired by chemical compositions will form the theme for the Wellcome Collection’s latest exhibition, which kicks off today in London.
The medical research charity and gallery claims it is the first time that original 1950s textile designs, originating from the Festival of Britain, will be shown together since 1951.
The exhibition, entitled from Atoms to Patterns and guest curated by Lesley Jackson, will explore the work of the Festival Pattern Group – one of the initiatives of the 1951 festival – and its influence on the decoration and design of homewares from wallpaper to furniture, laminates, carpet and tableware.
Materials on show will include ICI leathercloth, Dunlop PVC, Wedgwood china, Chance glass, John Line wallpapers, Warerite laminates and Warner fabrics.
The exhibition runs until 10 August at the Wellcome Collection, 183 Euston Road, London NW1.
