Digital artists and designers are to be celebrated in a new awards scheme that launched last night in London.

Digital Artist of the Year will feature 13 categories including graphic design, animation, motion broadcast, digital and interactive design, 2D and 3D illustration, character design, concept and videogame art, and visual effects.

The awards, which are organised by publishing house Future with Intel, were officially launched by Watchmen co-creator Dave Gibbons at La Galleria on Pall Mall, SW1.

‘It used to be that painters and drawers did not know how to use computers and computer people couldn’t draw, but that is all changing now. Thanks to faster and faster chips the artistic process is becoming much quicker and easier,’ says Gibbons.

The deadline for entries is 31 August, and the winners will be announced in late October.

An exhibition of digital art will run at La Galleria until 8 April.

The awards website goes live this afternoon at www.digitalartistawards.com.
