Icelandic designers use volcanic resources

As Iceland’s volcanic activity continues to dominate headlines across Europe, Design Week is profiling the country’s young design talent, who use natural resources – including volcanic sand – in their designs.

Volcanic ash from eruptions at the Eyjafjallajökull volcano is continuing to ground flights across the Continent, and has disrupted UK-based design events including the D&AD judging and the Design Management Industry’s Transforming Design conference.

Tomorrow’s Design Week will profile the design talent the country produces, including Jón Björnsson, who casts black volcanic sand into vases and bowls, and Bjargey Ingólfsdóttir, whose cast-iron work evokes Iceland’s rock formations.
