Sony World Photography Awards winners unveiled

The winners of the Sony World Photography Awards 2010 have been unveiled, with the UK’s Martin Brent picking up the award for advertising photography.

Brent won the award for his work for the ‘dodgy cigs’ campaign from the Department of Health and HM Revenue & Customs, which warns against buying illicit tobacco.

Brent was one of 12 professional winners recognised at yesterday’s ceremony in Cannes. Also among the victors was the UK’s David Handley, who picked up the award for the fashion category.

The L’Iris d’Or/Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year prize was awarded to Italian photographer Tommaso Ausili. Ausili won in the contemporary issues category for his photographic depiction of an assembly line at an abattoir.

Astrid Merget, creative director of the World Photography Organisation, says, ‘The quality of work submitted by this year’s professional photographers was remarkable… We are all thrilled with the results.’
