Science Museum brief for Casson Mann and Universal Design Studio

The Science Museum has appointed Casson Mann and Universal Design Studio to work on its two Treasury galleries, as part of its Museum of the Future masterplan.

Casson Mann, led by associate Craig Riley, beat three other consultancies to design the Making Modern Science gallery, which will explore the history of science.

Universal Design Studio will work on the Making Modern Communications gallery, which will explore the history of communication technology, following a five-way pitch.

The projects cover two floors of the museum, and will include 3D design, 2D graphic design, interactives, lighting and acoustic design. According to the service contract, ‘the galleries will have a very different look and feel, and will require a differing approach to and focus on the interpretation of the content’.

When the tender was issued in October 2010, Tim Molloy, head of creative direction at the Science Museum, said that it was hoped the galleries would be completed by October 2014.
