Sajid Javid, MP for Bromsgrove and formerly Financial Secretary to the Treasury, has been appointed as the new Culture Secretary.

The announcement comes after Maria Miller’s resignation from the Cabinet this morning following a Parliamentary enquiry into her expenses

In a letter of resignation to David Cameron Miller said ‘the present situation has become a distraction’ from Government work.

Although cleared of funding a home for her parents at taxpayer’s expense by the Independent Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, she was told to repay £5,800 by The Commons Standards Committee.

David Cameron announced Javid’s appointment to the Cabinet this morning.

Javid was state-school educated and has a degree in economics and politics from Exeter University. He became a member of the Conservative party in 1988 and has a CV that includes a number of senior banking positions.

At the age of 25 he became vice president of Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. He later joined Deutsche Bank in London.
