Gallery space for crafts group

A new crafts gallery and shop is set to open next week in London, displaying work by members of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. The society is approaching its 120th anniversary, making it the oldest crafts organisation in the UK.

The space, which measures 30m2, is located in Shoreditch. It will be run by SDC members and jewellery designer duo Evangelos Pourgouris and Miranda Falkner, who also designed the interior and branding for the gallery.

The gallery, plans for which began in 2001, will host a permanent collection of members’ works, as well as themed exhibitions. The first is a ceramics, textiles and furniture show called One Fine Day.

‘We currently have exhibitions at venues in London, but they only run for a week at a time, so this is a great development from SDC and its members,’ says Pourgouris, who has leased the gallery by SDC, which owns the space.

The inaugural show, One Fine Day, opens to the public on 7 September. Admission is free.
