Independent workers should ‘behave like brands’

Kate Blandford, former head of packaging design at Sainsbury’s, says independent workers should adopt strategies such as behaving like a brand and creating an ad-hoc ‘team’ around themselves.

Blandford set up on her own in May 2008, and says, ‘Adjusting from a well-structured environment, working to someone else’s agenda, to one where everything is down to you, can be an exciting and daunting process.’

She adds, ‘I realised that things should not be the same. I could now shape my own world. This was as liberating as it was terrifying.’

Blandford offers several pieces of advice to those setting up on their own, including using your creative skills to create your best working atmosphere, and not underselling yourself.

I absolutely agree with kate when she says its linerating yet terrifying. Its not easy to work all by yourself, once you are used to a team around you. It would be interesting to hear more.

    cheers
