Mather & Co tees off with luxury golf hotel interiors project

Cheshire-based interior design consultancy Mather & Co is working on the interiors of a new luxury golf hotel and spa in the county.

The development is being built at the Mere Golf & Country Club, near Knutsford, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

The consultancy was appointed to the work last week after taking part in a credentials pitch around six months ago, according to Mather & Co director Chris Mather.

Mather describes the course, which is wrapped around a mere, as ‘one of the most prestigious and premier golf clubs in the region’. ‘It’s idyllic,’ he adds.

Mather & Co’s work at the Mere is three-fold. It is working on an 86-bedroom hotel, which will be an extension to the golf club building; a spa, which will be an extension to the stable block; and general refurbishment and enhancements to the existing golf and country club.

The consultancy is working with the Southport branch of architect NJSR on the project.

Mather says, ‘There has been a significant investment in the golf course, and the aim of this work is to bring the rest of the offer up to the same standard.

‘The existing golf club and stable block buildings are listed Victorian Cheshire brick buildings, so we don’t want the extensions to compete with them.’

He says the interiors will use ‘natural materials’ and a ‘neutral palette’, and that lighting will be a significant factor in the design. ‘It will be very much like our work at the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool,’ he adds.

Mark Boler, owner of the Mere Golf & Country Club, says, ‘I wish to retain and respect the traditional Victorian architectural elements at Mere, yet introduce a fresh, contemporary design which celebrates Mere’s golfing heritage.’ The work is set to complete in 2011.
