A big issue

Next month New Designer One Year On 2009 winner Lizzie Mary Cullen will hold her first solo exhibition. Not only will it be an impressive first show from a talented illustrator and designer, but Cullen also aims to raise more than £10 000 for the Big Issue during the exhibition.

Cullen, who graduated from Goldsmiths in 2008, produces work that focuses heavily on urban spaces. After winning New Designers One Year on in 2009, she was commissioned by Zizzi to draw large murals on the walls of a number of its restaurants as part of a national rebrand.

Cullen’s entire London collection will be for sale during the show, including original works, on sale at prices starting from £3 000, and smaller pieces, priced at around £400. Money from the sale will go to the Big Issue Foundation.

Cullen says, ‘I buy the Big Issue every week and the fact that it helps homeless people help themselves is amazing, and it’s also a really good quality publication. Also, speaking to many of the vendors, it really is a life-line for them, to start working to get back in employment, and basically get their lives back. It’s such an incredible force for good, I wanted to help out.’
