Design Event North East unveils 2010 line-up

Design Event North East has announced plans for its sixth festival which will take place in October.

Exhibitors have been asked to respond to the theme of conversation for this year’s event, which will take place throughout the North East from 22-31 October.

DENE marketing manager Kala Preston says, ‘We were interested in conversation in this age of Twitter, Facebook and e-mail. You can miss out on face-to-face contact and rely too much on technology.’

Designers Troika, Anthony Burrill, Daniel Eatock, Craig Ward and Keetra Dean Dixon will respond to and modernise a 1936 instructive document called the Art of Conversation by Milton Wright. The work will be exhibited in the streets of Newcastle on a trail from the station to Newcastle Library, which will include a 48-sheet billboard, empty shop windows and the library itself.

The Design Event Mart, held at the Baltic Centre of Contemporary Art in Gateshead, will feature exhibitions from designers AFID Design, Ayme Fitzgerald, Bettina Nissen, Kate Usher, Dead Good and Sarah Blood.

The festival will also feature an exhibition at Newcastle Art Centre Gallery curated by design consultancy Sumo, a pop-up design shop at Newcastle’s Mushroom Works and an exhibition of the designers DENE will take to 100% Design, including Dan Civico, Aether & Hemera and Raskl Limited.
