Shigeru Ban Architects: cardboard cathedral

Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, known for his experimentation with materials – such as modular refugee shelters made from paper tubes – has submitted designs for a cardboard cathedral for earthquake-hit Christchurch in New Zealand. The Anglican cathedral was severely damaged in February’s earthquake and Ban’s design – for a temporary, interim cathedral, is based on a floor-plan of the original cathedral, using cardboard tubes and shipping containers for foundations.
