London Design Festival brings graphics to the fore

Having faced criticism in the past for having too strong a focus on furniture and products, London Design Festival is this year aiming to redress the balance with a series of graphics events.

Indeed, LDF is hosting an entire weekend dedicated to graphics at the Victoria & Albert Museum (and supported by Design Week).

Among highlights of the weekend will be free talks from Jonathan Barnbrook on designing for Bowie, Domenic Lippa on his work for the Typographic Circle, and Michael Johnson looking at museum branding.

There will be a presentation of the Moleskine sketch relay project and a panel discussion featuring Noma Bar, Kate Moross and Peter Crawley talking about the joy of print.

The V&A will also be hosting a series of free drop-in workshops and activities, including a Typetasting session hosted by Sarah Hyndman and your chance to take part in the Moleskine sketchathon.

The V&A’s Gallery 55 will be hosting the 8-18 exhibition, which will look at Lippa’s work on TypoCircle’s Circular magazine, while Outline Editions will be showcasing work by Malika Favre, Anthony Burrill, Marion Deuchars and more at Design Junction.

Meanwhile the Global Design Forum will play host to one of the biggest names in graphics, with Peter Saville taking to the stage on 16 September in conversation with journalist and broadcaster Paul Morley.

LDF deputy director Max Fraser says, ‘This year we have chosen to bring graphics to the fore with the themed weekend at the V&A, comprising plenty of lively talks and workshops.

‘We have also encouraged more graphics activity across the city, which manifests in exhibitions and events staged by our partners.

‘Why? Well, graphic design and its associated 2D outlets have always been under-represented as part of the wider mix of design disciplines that are already part of the London Design Festival.

‘We are blessed with the word “design” in our name. We don’t want the London Design Festival to necessarily get bigger, but it should certainly grow in its breadth of design disciplines. Our activities this year with graphics are one step towards that goal.’

London Design Festival runs from 14-22 September. For more information on events visit www.londondesignfestival.com.
