2013 is both the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Henry Royce, the motoring and aviation pioneer who co-founded Rolls Royce, and the centenary of the founding of Aston Martin.

For The British Auto Legends Series Why Not Associates has worked on a six-stamp set featuring the Throroughbreads – the Jaguar E-Type, Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, Aston Martin DB5, MG MGB, Morgan Plus 8 and the Lotus Esprit.

Meanwhile Robert Maude and Sarah Davies have designed a four-stamp mini sheet, featuring the Workhorses – the Morris Minor Van, Austin FX4 black cab, Ford Anglia 105E and Land Rover Defender 110.

The six Thoroughbred cars were sought out by Why Not Associates, who looked for mint condition examples and employed car photographer James Mann to capture them.

Andrew Hammond, director of stamps and collectibles for Royal Mail, says, ‘This is a fantastic set of stamps that features a collection of the very best in British motor car manufacturing in the 1960s and 70s. These cars are classic in every sense and we are delighted to be bringing a reminder of these iconic motor cars to the nation’s doorsteps through this latest stamp issue.’
